Overview of Bullying

Bullying in the workplace is a big problem - and one which employers find difficult to come to grips with. Bullying is a behaviour which can become part of the culture of an organisation - either throughout the whole body corporate, or in patches.

At a senior management level it is possible to become isolated from the reality of what is happening at lower levels. This is particularly so where the business has a great many 'satellite stations' - semi-autonomous units remote from the centre.

Remote Bullying

With the growth of electronic remote reporting, HQ can believe that a particular operation is performing satisfactorily without understanding how such apparent results were obtained.

The explosion of availability of statistical data has enabled weak people managers to use such data as a weapons system with which to 'terrorise' staff. Such an approach can yield acceptable results in the short run. In the long run it delivers high long-term sickness, high staff churns, stress, un co-operative attitudes and a shortage of good staff looking for promotion.

Management needs to understand how to use all the modern aids to develop and mould a sound workplace culture where all are valued, performance problems are addressed, the un co-operative and lazy are released from the workplace, and where high performance is recognised.

Inadequate Managers

Bullying is a technique used by inadequate people managers who are faced with tasks to perform and have no other techniques to achieve the tasks.

We aim to help such managers develop an enhanced range of techniques with our hands-on and practical approach.
